FN Logic Puzzle: Political Memoirs

1) “I miss the old days,” said Michael, “the cut and the thrust, especially the thrust of the knife into your opponent’s back. I really enjoyed that.” Close observers would have spotted a small, but perceptible, flinch from the white-haired man opposite.

2) “I knew I shouldn’t have agreed to do that TV appearance,” said one former politician. “Still, I suppose it gave me some practice for when I became a panellist on the TV game show.” Turning his gaze away from the fire he asked: “What did you do after politics, Nigel?” “I moved to France. Lovely country – always liked it,” replied Nigel.

3) “It was that Twitter thing that did for me,” said Boris rather grumpily. “How was I supposed to know the row would be read by everyone? It even stopped me getting a cushy City job like you,” he said to the man making whirring noises in fond remembrance of an exciting helicopter ride he took from somewhere to somewhere… he can’t quite remember.

4) “Have I ever told you about the great slap-up lunch on the day after the vote?” said one retired campaigner smiling. “And the best thing about it was I made my PR adviser pay for it after he persuaded me to take part in a terrible photo-opportunity the week before.”

If you think you’ve worked out the name of the former politician who enjoyed playing poker on the ‘Let’s give £350 million a week to the NHS’ battle bus, then email your answer to puzzle@efinancialnews.com no later than midday on Thursday, July 14 for a chance to win an exclusive Puzzle Champion mug. If you are selected as a winner, your name and company will be published unless you state otherwise when submitting your answer.**

In last week’s puzzle, Liz was updating Facebook, listening to Ed Sheeran and looking forward to a trip to Secret Cinema. Congratulations to Stephanie Chan of Nomura, who was randomly selected from last week’s correct answers to receive the prize mug.

Here’s the solution: Chris is listening to a spot of thrash metal (clue 4) and Liz is updating her profile on Facebook (clue 4), so the person who is watching YouTube and listening to Drake, who isn’t John (clue 1), must be Mo.

The person reading The Onion website is starting the weekend with a Pilates class (clue 3) and the employee chilling with Mariah Carey will continue the chill with a night of Netflix (clue 2), so Mo’s YouTube and Drake afternoon, which won’t be followed by a night at the Secret Cinema (clue 5), must be a precursor to a night out at the Fabric nightclub.

The person reading The Onion and heading for Pilates isn’t listening to Ed Sheeran (clue 3) and we know it isn’t Mariah Carey or Drake, so it must be Chris, listening to thrash metal, who’s reading The Onion and steeling himself for a Pilates class.

This leaves John as the person surfing the Reddit website. So he’s not going to the Secret Cinema event (clue 5) and must be planning the Netflix night and listening to Mariah Carey, leaving Liz updating Facebook, listening to Ed Sheeran and looking forward to a trip to Secret Cinema.
