Meet the Rising Stars in Asset Management 2016

Red Photographic

L-R: Malcolm Smith (JP Morgan Asset Management), Lisa Purdy (Aon Hewitt) and James Lewis (Mercer)

They have had a ringside seat for some challenging and fascinating events in financial markets, from Lehman Brothers to Brexit. The list includes a former Treasury adviser to George Osborne, an ABS fund manager who worked with the New York Fed during the credit crunch, and a renewables specialist who spent two years advising the Tunisian government on building a massive solar plant in the desert.

Sporting achievement also seems to be well represented this year, with a downhill skier, a judo black belt, a former England boxing team captain and two former national tennis players on the list. Diverse backgrounds, varied experiences and track records of launching funds, building businesses and counselling clients through challenging times, should stand these young men and women in good stead for the years ahead.

• Methodology: In the past three months, Financial News canvassed the market for opinion and drew up a longlist of more than 150 potential rising stars. All nominees had to be under 40 on September 5, 2016, based in Europe, the Middle East or Africa and working in asset management. Candidates were then assessed by FN’s editorial panel on four criteria: achievements to date given their age, the stature of their mentors, firepower at their disposal and their potential to reach a position of great influence. The longlist was then whittled down to the final 40 listed here.
